New Year`s Eve Hair Style Fit for a Medieval Queen

29 December 2014 | + Silvia Kabaivanova

When women plan their outfits for New Year's Eve, they set all restraint aside. New Year's Eve is the one night of the whole year when it is acceptable to be as glamorous as possible, even if the venue or event does not warrant A-list style. For just one night, women want to have the red carpet experience, and this includes styling their hair to match the fanciest and most beautiful celebrities in the world.

Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones

One of the most frequently imitated hairstyles does not belong to a real person. It belongs to a fictional character: Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones. Cersei's loosely flowing hair contrasts with her icily refined personality and presence. She usually wears her hair mostly down and parted down the centre, with only the sides pulled back. It looks very regal and classic, and has the added bonus of being very easy to mimic, regardless of one's skill level.

1# Simple Way

We spoke with Yen Hair a Salon from Barnt Green in England about how to create this fabulous style. Yen told us “the simplest version of this look can be completed within minutes”. Here is how to do it. After making a straight centre part, separate a medium-sized chunk of hair from near the temple, making sure to leave some hair swinging down over the ear. Do the same on the other side. Twist both strands upward while pulling them back, fastening the pieces together with a decorative barrette. The look is softened by leaving some delicate tendrils out of the twists to frame the face.

2# More Complex

New years hair styleA slightly more complicated version involves braiding the strands before securing them at the back of the head. This seems easy, but it is actually somewhat tricky to get the angles of the braids perfectly correct. Braiding the strands while they hang down and them pulling them back results in awkward bunching near the tops of the braids. A good middle ground is only doing the braids halfway and then pinning them to the sides of the head instead of to each other in back. This variation is fun because it allows for the use of twice as many sparkly hair clips.

Another way to adapt this look is to make a deep side part in the hair and only pull back the hair on one side. Pulling back a strand on the side that has less hair is the fancier option. Most of the hair is left swinging freely. Adding volume to the other side creates a Veronica Lake effect. Sweeping up all of the hair on the twist-side is a fun way to wear the popular half-shaved look.

There is no limit to the number of ways that the loose hair can be styled. It can be left straight, curled or teased for maximum beachy beauty. Cersei Lannister's style is a great foundation for endless personalized variations because it lets most of the hair hang down prettily while also keeping it out of the face, making it ideal for a night full of dancing.
